The Environment is now more than ever in need of our helping hands, and Weis Markets is proud to be  a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED program & the EPA’s GreenChill Partnership.

LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system providing it’s members like Weis Markets a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. As a member of USBGC we are learning new ways leverage technology into our building design to improve building performance with a goal to maximize energy savings, increase water efficiency, reduce CO₂ emissions, improve indoor environmental quality, and increase awareness of good stewardship of resources. Weis Markets is currently using technologies such as high-efficiency lighting, automated building control systems, energy control recommissioning, and variable frequency drives (vfd’s) to reduce energy consumption in our current facilities and researching and modeling a number of advanced technologies such as desiccant HVAC units, heat-reflective roof covering, high-efficiency kitchen exhaust hoods, energy-efficient glass doors for dairy cases, LED refrigerated case lighting, and distributed refrigeration with energy-efficient scroll compressors for implementation into our new facilities.

We are also proud of our accomplishments resulting from our membership with the EPA’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership which is a cooperative alliance with supermarkets to promote advanced technologies, strategies, and practices that reduce refrigerant charges and emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases. Since joining the GreenChill Partnership we have committed to the utilization of new practices and technologies to reduce refrigerant charges and leaks in our stores, and we have won GreenChill’s Silver Certification for our Remodel project in Hanover, PA.
