(Sunbury, PA)– Weis Markets today launched its fourth annual Weis Paws for Pets program offering customers the opportunity to donate money, pet food and supplies to local animal shelters and rescue organizations in May.

The program began Sunday, April 29 and continues through Memorial Day weekend.  Paws for Pets will run in all Weis Markets’ stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.

Approximately 94 local pet shelters and rescue organizations will participate in this year’s program and 64 stores will host pet adopt-a-thon events with local pet organizations.

“Our Paws for Pets program is designed to help animal shelters and rescues in the spring when they are inundated with unwanted and abandoned animals,” said Dennis Curtin, Director of Public Relations.  “Our customers have been extremely generous in the past.  Last year, we generated more than $98,000 in pet product donations for these organizations and hope to do even better in 2012.”

Weis Markets’ associates worked with local pet shelters to develop a list of needed items, including: dog, cat, puppy and kitten food, kitty litter, collars, harnesses and leashes, toys and treats, pet shampoos, nail clippers, pet brushes, combs, food and water bowls, dishwashing liquid, bleach, new mops and brooms, towels/washcloths and powder-free latex gloves.

A suggested list of items will be available in stores to help customers select suitable donation items.  After customers purchase the items they wish to donate, they can simply place the items in a specially marked donation collection cart near checkout.

A new option this year, allows customers to make donations when they purchase vouchers for $1, $3 or $5, or Paws for Pets bracelets for $1, with all proceeds donated the local shelters.

Weis Markets’ store team, which is hosting a Little League open house beginning at 11 AM, will present the check to Carol Quinlivan-Schaum, Assistant Director of Parks, City of Binghamton.  The donation will be used to purchase equipment for the league.  This event will have refreshments and hot dogs.

The 62,000-square-foot units are located in Forks Township, near Easton, Pa and in Bellefonte, near State College.  Each unit achieved a “silver” GreenChill certificate by meeting tough benchmarks for cutting emissions that harm the earth’s protective ozone layer and contribute to global warming.

“Only a handful of American supermarkets have achieved GreenChill status. To meet these high standards, both stores reduced their refrigerant charges by more than 50%.  We achieved these results by installing more efficient refrigeration systems and cases throughout these stores and then carefully monitoring them,” said Kevin Small, Weis Markets vice president, Store Construction and Development.   “We are grateful to be recognized as an EPA partner.  We will continue to invest in programs and systems that help us reduce our overall environmental impact throughout our store base.”

According to the EPA, meeting or exceeding GreenChill certification criteria helps prevent deterioration of the Earth’s protective ozone layer and  combats climate change.  Ozone in the upper atmosphere protects the planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation, which can cause skin cancer, cataracts and other ailments.

Even refrigerants that don’t damage the ozone layer can contribute significantly to global warming.  That’s why reducing store emissions are doubly important, the EPA adds.

To achieve silver certification, a store must meet stringent environmental criteria, including the following:

• use refrigerants that do not damage the Earth’s protective ozone layer;
• reduce the size of its refrigerant charge by at least 50 percent from the industry average;
• reduce annual refrigerant emissions to 15 percent or less of total store capacity;
• test refrigeration systems for adherence to GreenChill’s leak tightness guidelines.

As part of the Grand Opening celebration, the new store will make $23,500 in local donations to fourteen local charities listed below.  The official ribbon-cutting will take place at 9am.

The new store is located at 170 Buckaroo Lane on a 40-acre site on PA Rt. 550/Zion Road in Spring Township near Bellefonte.  It will feature Weis Markets’ newest store design, which offers expansive produce, bakery and deli departments offering a wide range of prepared items along with service seafood and meat departments along with expanded grocery, health and beauty care, dairy and frozen departments.

The replacement store has also added a pharmacy, in-store café with seating for 35 where beer is sold and a gas station.

“We can’t wait to get started in Bellefonte and Spring Township,” said Weis Markets Regional Vice President Brad Kochenour.  “Our new store is 50% larger than the one it replaces and it offers a tremendous range of options, increased selection in every department and improved convenience.  As part of this project, we’ve added approximately 125 store-level jobs.”

“We’ve also reduced our store’s overall impact on the environment by installing energy efficient equipment and refrigerated cases using 60% less refrigeration than a typical supermarket – which lessens our store’s impact on global warming,” said Mr. Kochenour.

Environmental Features

The Bellefonte store will utilize advanced refrigeration and climate control technologies designed to lessen its impact on the environment and global warming.  These technologies will reduce the store’s refrigerant charge (usage) by 60% compared to a conventional supermarket.

The store will also feature a number of energy reducing technologies, including: solar/thermal rated windows, reflective roofs reducing coolant needs in the summer, LED lighting and skylights for natural lighting that reduce energy usage.  The store also features a concrete floor that will be cleaned with ionized water resulting in chemical free cleaning and easier maintenance.

Local Donations

Weis Markets’ Bellefonte/Spring Township store will make the following local donations: $5,000 to Centre Volunteers in Medicine for its clinic program, $5,000 to Nittany Medical Center for its emergency room indigent care program and $2,500 to Bellefonte Youth Football.  It is also making individual $1,000 donations to: Faith Centre Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Centre County 4H, Bellefonte YMCA, Bellefonte High School Band Boosters, Bellefonte High School Chorus, Bellefonte Middle School Shoot the Moon program, Bellefonte Borough Park, Spring Township, Bellefonte Undine Fire Company and Logan Fire Company.
