Sunbury, PA (November 11, 2022) — Weis Markets today made a $5,000 donation to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s MilitaryShare program in observance of Veterans Day. The MilitaryShare program provides food insecure veterans, active servicemembers and their families with the support they need and deserve.

Food insecurity is a pervasive issue among veterans. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reports that over 20 percent of households receiving food assistance have at least one member who has served, or is currently serving, in the military. The MilitaryShare program offers registered families a box of fresh, nutritious food at armories, VFW and AMVET locations throughout the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s 27 county service area.

“Many veterans in the communities we serve face life-threatening challenges, often times the result of combat; we want to do our part to make sure food insecurity is not something they have to worry about,” said Maria Rizzo, Vice President of Advertising and Marketing for Weis Markets. “This Veterans Day, we are proud to support the MilitaryShare program in their efforts to fight hunger among the local veterans who are so deserving of our support.”

Representatives from Weis Markets presented the donation to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank at American Legion Post 44 in Northumberland, PA, which is one of the convenient pickup locations for families registered through the MilitaryShare program.

“This is the sixth year that American Legion Post 44 has participated in the MilitaryShare program. We started out distributing boxes of food to 34 families, and now we support about 150 families each month,” said Dick Simpson, MilitaryShare coordinator for American Legion Post 44. “We are proud to provide this service to the gracious recipients and make their lives easier, and we thank the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and donors like Weis Markets for making this work possible.”

“We thank Weis Markets for their generous support of our MilitaryShare program this Veterans Day,” said Joe Arthur, Executive Director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “Unfortunately, hunger is an issue affecting veterans and active-duty military personnel and their families in central PA, including Northumberland County. Our MilitaryShare program is important to address this need, and this gift from Weis Markets will help ensure this program’s sustainability. Veterans and members of the military help us in our nation’s time of need and it’s critical we help them in theirs. They fought for our freedom. By providing them with food to feed their families, we are fighting for their future.”

Each Thursday throughout the year, Weis Markets offers veterans and active duty servicemembers a 10 percent discount on Weis Quality products as an expression of the company’s gratitude to their service.
