CHOW Donation

Donations to regional food banks and pantries generated through combined customer and corporate contributions

SUNBURY, PA (December 20, 2023) – Weis Markets today announced it donated more than $1 million to 18 food banks and pantries as part of the Company’s 16th annual Fight Hunger program. The donation includes customer contributions made at checkout in Weis stores throughout 2023 and a substantial corporate donation.

“Year after year we’re wowed by how supportive our customers and associates are of our Fight Hunger campaign,” said Bob Gleeson, Weis Markets Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing. “We know how important it is to help our local food banks and pantries, particularly during this time of year when we see an increased demand for food. We’re grateful for our Weis team, and our shoppers, for joining with us to make an impact.”

As part of the campaign, Weis Markets presented significant donations to several of its largest partner food banks within its seven-state market area. These contributions include $250,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and $200,000 to the Maryland Food Bank.

“This generous gift from our long-time and deeply valued partner Weis Markets will help us continue to improve the lives of our neighbors in Central Pennsylvania by providing the highest quality service and nutritious, nourishing food,” said Joe Arthur, CEO of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “Our neighbors face tough choices right now between paying their rent, gas, and medical bills or buying food,” he said, adding that the food bank is serving its 27-county service territory at levels even higher than at the peak of the pandemic.

“At a time when more than 1 in 3 Marylanders are having difficulty making ends meet, we’re grateful to Weis Markets for spearheading such a successful campaign,” MFB President & CEO Carmen Del Guercio said. “Thanks to the Fight Hunger initiative and the generosity of Weis customers, fewer Maryland families will be forced to make tough choices between putting food on the table and paying rent or other bills this holiday season.”
