The company is one of the first grocery stores in Maryland to implement Philips AEDs in all its Maryland store locations under new state regulation
Sunbury, PA (April 24, 2024) – Weis Markets today announced it has launched a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program in partnership with Cardio Partners and Philips. Beginning January 1, 2025, all Maryland grocery stores will be required to have AEDs in place should a life-threatening event occur, and Weis Markets is one of the first grocery chains to implement Philips AEDs across its 49 Maryland stores.
The company held a launch event at its Nottingham store located on Bel Air Road to showcase the AEDs. Dignitaries including Delegate Bonnie Cullison, Delegate Carl Jackson and State Senator Katherine Klausmeier joined representatives from Weis Markets, Cardio Partners, Philips and special guest, Carol McDermott Sheya, who lost her husband to a sudden cardiac arrest in a restaurant and has since become an advocate for AED programs, to discuss the importance of implementing AEDs in Maryland grocery stores.
Baltimore County Fire and Emergency Medical Services also joined the launch and brought a fire truck and ambulance to provide hands-only CPR training to event attendees, while Cardio Partners and Philips provided device demonstrations, product literature and promotional information for discounted AED purchases.
“Our top priority is the safety of our customers, and we are always looking for solutions to enhance their wellbeing when they are shopping in our stores,” said Weis Markets Vice President of Asset Protection Will England. “By implementing this AED program throughout our Maryland locations and training more than 400 associates on how to use the device, we’re confident our stores will be equipped to handle life-threatening situations should one occur.”
